In October 1965, while en route from Juarez, Mexico, U. S. Customs agents at the El Paso International Airport seized hundreds of pep pills and tranquilizers found in Johnny Cash's luggage. The Man in Black overnighted in the county jail before pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count. He was fined $1,000 and received a 30-day suspended sentence.

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested by Alabama police in February 1956 for his part in the Montgomery bus boycotts. He served a brief stint in jail. King was sentenced again two years later for civil disobedience and ordered jail time, but he never served it thanks to a public official who opted to pay the fines instead (and avoid King's notorious publicity).
