In March 2006, Manalapan, Florida, police charged New Age musician Yanni (legal name John Yanni Christopher) with domestic abuse, alleging he struck his live-in girlfriend after ordering her to move out of his waterfront mansion. The official report states the 51-year-old piano player verbally abused the woman, calling her a "cunt," "whore," and "garbage." and notes that the woman's upper lip was swollen and split open and a small amount of dried blood was evident on her lower lip, as well as redness on both her forearms. Yanni denied striking her, but spent half a day in the Palm Beach County jail.
